Festival dates may depend on Chennai sunrise, sunset, moonrise, nakshatram or the applicable tithi. Karadaiyan Nombu is tied to the exact Masi–Panguni transition, while Panguni Uthiram depends on Uthiram Nakshatram. Confirm all timings in a Chennai-based printed Tamil Panchangam.
How Tamil Families Celebrate the Festivals of March
Maha Shivaratri
Maha Shivaratri is the most important Shiva observance of the month. Devotees keep vigil, perform abhishekam and worship Shiva during the night, often dividing the puja into four periods.
A strict vratam may include only water, milk or fruit. Many families instead take one light sattvic meal. Rice, heavy grain dishes, meat, alcohol, onion and garlic are traditionally avoided by those observing the fast.
- Bathe and clean the puja area before sunset.
- Place a Shiva Lingam or Shiva image on a clean cloth.
- Perform abhishekam with water or milk according to family custom.
- Offer vilvam leaves, white flowers, fruit and a vilakku.
- Chant “Om Namah Shivaya” and complete the night puja.
Puja samagri: Shiva Lingam, clean water, milk, vilvam leaves, white flowers, lamp, incense and fruit.
Tamil homes often keep the naivedyam simple. Fruit, milk or a light prasadam may be offered. Many families visit a nearby Shiva temple in the evening, where the repeated sound of the Panchakshara mantra continues late into the night.
Karadaiyan Nombu
Karadaiyan Nombu is observed at the transition from Masi to Panguni. The vratam recalls Savitri’s devotion and courage, and women traditionally pray for the well-being of their husbands and families.
The fast continues until the prescribed nombu period. Families prepare sweet and salted karadai using rice flour and cowpeas. The offering is served with fresh butter after the puja.
- Clean the prayer area and draw a kolam.
- Light a vilakku before the family deity.
- Prepare sweet and salted karadai as naivedyam.
- Offer the karadai with unsalted butter.
- Tie the yellow nombu thread at the prescribed time and pray.
Puja samagri: Lamp, flowers, turmeric thread, rice flour, cowpeas, jaggery, coconut and butter.
The familiar prayer asks for an enduring marriage and family welfare. At home, the warm karadai is placed on a banana leaf with a small spoon of butter before everyone shares the prasadam.
Panguni Uthiram
Panguni Uthiram falls when Uthiram Nakshatram occurs during Panguni, often near Pournami. Tamil temples associate the day with divine marriages, including those of Murugan and Deivanai and other sacred couples.
A strict fast is not compulsory in every family. Devotees commonly eat simple vegetarian food and avoid meat, alcohol and stale dishes. Temple vows should be followed only with proper preparation.
- Bathe early and draw a fresh kolam.
- Light a lamp before Murugan or the family deity.
- Offer flowers, fruit, sandal paste and coconut.
- Chant “Om Saravanabhava” or recite Kanda Sashti Kavasam.
- Visit a temple for archana where practical.
Puja samagri: Murugan image, lamp, flowers, coconut, fruit, sandal paste, vibhuti and simple naivedyam.
Murugan temples may hold abhishekam, kalyana utsavam and processions. At home, families may prepare payasam, sundal or a small sattvic meal and share it after the puja.
Amalaki Ekadashi
Amalaki Ekadashi is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is traditionally connected with the amla tree. Devotees spend the day in prayer, Vishnu namam and quiet reading before completing parana on Dwadashi.
Rice, wheat, pulses, onion, garlic and tamasic food are avoided. Fruit, milk and a light vratam meal may be taken according to health and family practice.
- Bathe early and make a simple vratam sankalpam.
- Worship Lord Vishnu with tulasi and flowers.
- Offer amla fruit if clean fruit is available.
- Chant Vishnu Sahasranamam or a short Vishnu mantra.
- Complete the fast during the local parana period.
Puja samagri: Vishnu image, tulasi, flowers, lamp, incense, fruit, amla and water.
A Tamil household may offer fruit, milk or a small cup of payasam after the fast is completed. Vaishnava families may follow their temple or acharya’s instructions regarding fasting and parana.
Sankatahara Chaturthi
Sankatahara Chaturthi is a monthly Vinayagar vratam. Devotees fast through the day and complete the observance after moonrise, Chandra Darshan and Vinayagar puja.
Regular grain meals are usually avoided until the vratam ends. Fruit, milk or light sattvic food may be taken when needed. The Chennai moonrise time must be checked before the evening worship.
- Clean the puja place and light a vilakku.
- Offer arugampul, flowers and fruit to Vinayagar.
- Prepare kozhukattai or another simple naivedyam.
- Recite Vinayagar Agaval or a Ganesha mantra.
- Observe the Moon, offer prayer and complete the fast.
Puja samagri: Vinayagar image, arugampul, flowers, lamp, coconut, fruit and kozhukattai.
A few freshly steamed kozhukattai make a homely offering. Some families prepare sundal instead, while others keep the naivedyam to coconut and banana before sharing prasadam.
