How Tamil Families Celebrate the Festivals of February

Thai Amavasai

Thai Amavasai is observed for remembering ancestors and expressing gratitude to earlier generations. Families following formal rites may perform tarpanam under the guidance of a priest or according to their established household tradition.

Some devotees keep a simple fast until the ancestral prayers are complete. Fresh sattvic food is preferred, while meat, alcohol, onion, garlic and stale dishes are traditionally avoided in households observing the day strictly.

  1. Bathe early and clean the prayer area.
  2. Light a vilakku (விளக்கு) in a quiet place.
  3. Perform tarpanam only according to family custom or proper guidance.
  4. Offer water, sesame and simple food where prescribed.
  5. Give food or useful items in charity according to your means.

Puja samagri: Lamp, clean water, black sesame, darbha where traditionally used, flowers and simple food for charity.

Many Chennai families visit a temple, waterbody or seashore when their custom requires it. Others observe the day quietly at home, prepare a plain meal and remember departed family members without turning the ritual into a public display.

Ganesh Jayanti

Ganesh Jayanti marks Magha Shukla Chaturthi and is dedicated to Lord Vinayagar. Although Vinayaka Chaturthi later in the year is more widely celebrated in Tamil Nadu, some homes and temples observe this day with a simple archana.

Devotees may keep a fruit or milk vratam until the puja is completed. Rice, wheat, pulses, meat, alcohol, onion and garlic are avoided by those following a strict fast.

  1. Clean the puja area and draw a small kolam (கோலம்).
  2. Place an image of Vinayagar on a clean cloth.
  3. Light a lamp and offer arugampul and flowers.
  4. Offer coconut, fruit or homemade kozhukattai.
  5. Recite Vinayagar Agaval and perform arati.

Puja samagri: Vinayagar image, arugampul, flowers, lamp, coconut, fruit and kozhukattai.

A few steamed kozhukattai make a warm household offering. Some families prepare sundal instead, while others keep the naivedyam (நைவேத்யம்) as simple as coconut and banana.

Ratha Saptami

Ratha Saptami is dedicated to Surya and falls on Shukla Saptami. It is traditionally seen as a day to honour sunlight, health, discipline and the natural rhythm that supports daily life.

Some devotees complete the morning worship before eating. Others take fruit or a light sattvic meal. Meat, alcohol and stale food are avoided by families observing a vratam.

  1. Bathe early, preferably before or near sunrise.
  2. Draw a Surya kolam near the prayer area.
  3. Face east and offer clean water to Surya.
  4. Light a lamp and offer red flowers, fruit and jaggery.
  5. Recite Aditya Hridayam or a short Surya mantra.

Puja samagri: Copper vessel, clean water, lamp, red flowers, fruit, jaggery and simple naivedyam.

In many homes, the worship is completed before the regular morning routine begins. Some families use erukku leaves during the ritual bath, while others keep the observance simple with arghyam, prayer and a fresh vegetarian meal.

Masi Magam

Masi Magam is observed when Magam Nakshatram occurs during the Tamil month of Masi. Temple deities may be taken in procession to the sea, a river, pond or temple tank for ceremonial theerthavari.

A strict fast is not required in every household. Devotees generally eat simple vegetarian food and avoid meat, alcohol and stale dishes. Anyone visiting a crowded waterbody should follow local safety instructions.

  1. Bathe early and clean the household shrine.
  2. Light a lamp and offer flowers to the family deity.
  3. Visit a temple theerthavari only where proper arrangements are provided.
  4. Offer fruit, coconut and simple naivedyam.
  5. Perform archana (அர்ச்சனை) and receive prasadam respectfully.

Puja samagri: Lamp, flowers, coconut, fruit, incense, vibhuti or kumkum and simple naivedyam.

Near coastal temples, the procession toward the water is a familiar sight. At home, families may prepare payasam or a small sattvic meal. The observance centres on temple worship, sacred water and prayer rather than an elaborate household feast.

Sankatahara Chaturthi

Sankatahara Chaturthi is a monthly Vinayagar vratam. Devotees fast during the day and complete the observance after moonrise, Chandra Darshan and Vinayagar puja.

Regular grain meals are usually avoided until the vratam ends. Fruit, milk and light sattvic food may be taken when necessary. The correct Chennai moonrise time should be confirmed before beginning the evening worship.

  1. Clean the puja area and light a vilakku.
  2. Offer arugampul, flowers and fruit to Vinayagar.
  3. Prepare kozhukattai or another simple naivedyam.
  4. Recite Vinayagar Agaval or a Ganesha mantra.
  5. Observe the Moon, offer prayer and complete the fast.

Puja samagri: Vinayagar image, arugampul, flowers, lamp, coconut, fruit and kozhukattai.

The evening food is usually light and freshly prepared. Some households serve sundal or fruit after the prayer, while others prepare a few kozhukattai and share them as prasadam.
