How Tamil Families Celebrate the Festivals of April
Puthandu
Puthandu is the Tamil New Year and the first day of Chithirai (சித்திரை). Families begin the year with prayer, fresh clothes, blessings from elders and a meal that brings together different tastes.
Puthandu is not usually kept as a strict fast. Fresh vegetarian food is prepared, while stale dishes, meat and alcohol are avoided in traditionally observant homes. The day is meant to begin cleanly and peacefully.
- Clean the house and draw a fresh kolam at the entrance.
- Arrange fruit, flowers, betel leaves, coins and a mirror where customary.
- Light a kuthu vilakku before the family deity.
- Offer mango, neem flower pachadi and festive dishes as naivedyam.
- Perform arati and seek blessings from elders.
Puja samagri: Kuthu vilakku, flowers, fruit, coconut, betel leaves, turmeric, kumkum and festive naivedyam.
The kitchen usually carries the smell of mango, jaggery and roasted neem flowers. Manga pachadi combines sweet, sour and bitter tastes as a reminder that the coming year may bring many kinds of experiences. Payasam, vadai and a full banana-leaf meal may also be prepared.
Rama Navami
Rama Navami celebrates the birth of Lord Rama. Tamil Vaishnava temples conduct special recitations, archana and processions, while homes may read portions of the Ramayana or listen to Rama nama.
Some devotees keep a fruit or milk vratam until the puja is completed. Others eat one simple sattvic meal. Meat, alcohol, onion, garlic and heavy food are traditionally avoided.
- Clean the puja place and light a vilakku.
- Place an image of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman.
- Offer tulasi, flowers, fruit, panakam and neer mor.
- Recite Rama nama or a passage from the Ramayana.
- Perform arati and distribute the prasadam.
Puja samagri: Rama image, lamp, tulasi, flowers, fruit, panakam, neer mor and vadaparuppu.
Panakam made with jaggery, dry ginger and cardamom is a familiar offering. Neer mor and soaked moong dal are also served in many homes and temples, especially during the warm Chithirai season.
Chitra Pournami
Chitra Pournami is the first Pournami of the Tamil month of Chithirai. Families visit temples, offer prayers under the full Moon and reflect on personal conduct, responsibility and gratitude.
A strict fast is followed only in some households. Devotees may take fruit, milk or one simple vegetarian meal. Meat, alcohol and stale food are avoided by those observing the vratam.
- Clean the shrine and light a lamp in the evening.
- Offer flowers, fruit and simple naivedyam.
- Worship the family deity or Chitragupta where that tradition is followed.
- Recite prayers and spend a few minutes in quiet reflection.
- Observe the Moon and share prasadam.
Puja samagri: Lamp, flowers, fruit, coconut, incense and simple sattvic naivedyam.
Temple visits are common, and some families prefer sitting outdoors after moonrise. A small bowl of payasam, sundal or fruit is often enough for the household offering.
Kamada Ekadashi
Kamada Ekadashi is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and falls during the bright fortnight. Devotees keep the day sattvic, chant Vishnu nama and complete the fast during the prescribed Dwadashi parana period.
Rice, wheat, pulses, onion, garlic and tamasic food are avoided during a strict vratam. Fruit, milk and a light fasting meal may be taken according to health and family practice.
- Bathe early and make a simple vratam sankalpam.
- Worship Lord Vishnu with tulasi and flowers.
- Offer a lamp, fruit, incense and clean water.
- Recite Vishnu Sahasranamam or a short Vishnu mantra.
- Complete the fast during the local parana period.
Puja samagri: Vishnu image, tulasi, flowers, lamp, incense, fruit and water.
Tamil Vaishnava families may visit a Perumal temple and follow instructions given by their temple or acharya. At home, the puja is usually quiet, with fruit and tulasi offered before regular food is prepared after parana.
Sankatahara Chaturthi
Sankatahara Chaturthi is the monthly Vinayagar vratam. Devotees fast during the day and complete the observance after moonrise, Chandra Darshan and Vinayagar puja.
Regular grain meals are usually avoided until the vratam ends. Fruit, milk or light sattvic food may be taken when required. The correct Chennai moonrise time must be checked before worship.
- Clean the puja place and light a vilakku.
- Offer arugampul, flowers and fruit to Vinayagar.
- Prepare kozhukattai or another simple naivedyam.
- Recite Vinayagar Agaval or a Ganesha mantra.
- Observe the Moon, offer prayer and complete the fast.
Puja samagri: Vinayagar image, arugampul, flowers, lamp, coconut, fruit and kozhukattai.
A few freshly steamed kozhukattai make a homely offering. Some families prepare sundal instead, while others keep the naivedyam to coconut and banana before sharing prasadam.
