How Tamil Families Celebrate the Festivals of June

Ekadashi Vratam

Ekadashi (ஏகாதசி) is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Apara Ekadashi falls on 1 June, while Nirjala Ekadashi is observed around 14–15 June and Yogini Ekadashi on 30 June.

Devotees may keep a complete fast or take fruits, milk and simple vrat-friendly food. Rice, grains, onion, garlic, meat and alcohol are traditionally avoided. Elderly people, children and anyone with a medical condition should follow a safe, lighter vratam.

  1. Bathe early and clean the prayer area.
  2. Light a vilakku (விளக்கு) before Lord Vishnu or Perumal.
  3. Offer tulasi leaves, flowers, fruit and clean water.
  4. Recite Vishnu Sahasranamam or chant “Om Namo Narayanaya.”
  5. Perform simple deeparadhanai and distribute prasadam (பிரசாதம்).

Puja samagri: Vilakku, oil or ghee, flowers, tulasi, fruit, water, incense and camphor.

Many Tamil homes prepare a light meal after the vratam is completed at the proper parana time. Some families visit a Perumal temple and offer tulasi garlands or contribute food for annadanam.

Amavasai

Amavasai (அமாவாசை) on 4 June is a day for remembering ancestors and seeking family well-being. Those who traditionally perform tarpanam follow the method taught by their family priest.

Many devotees take only a simple sattvic meal. Non-vegetarian food and alcohol are avoided, and some households also leave out onion and garlic. The focus is on prayer, restraint and charity rather than celebration.

  1. Bathe early and keep the house and prayer space clean.
  2. Draw a small kolam (கோலம்) and light a vilakku.
  3. Offer water and sesame according to the family’s tarpanam practice.
  4. Pray for the peace of departed ancestors.
  5. Donate food, rice or other useful items to someone in need.

Puja samagri: Water, black sesame, darbha grass when prescribed, flowers, lamp, rice and fruit.

A plain lunch with rice, dal, vegetables and payasam may be prepared after the rites. Families who do not perform formal tarpanam can offer a quiet prayer and support annadanam at a temple or charitable place.

Sashti Vratam

Sashti (சஷ்டி) is associated with Lord Murugan. The monthly observances in June fall on 10 June and 25 June, subject to local tithi rules. Devotees pray for courage, health and relief from difficulties.

Some people fast until the evening, while others take fruits, milk or one simple vegetarian meal. Onion, garlic and heavy food are commonly avoided. The strictness of the vratam depends on health and household practice.

  1. Clean the puja place and place an image of Lord Murugan.
  2. Light a vilakku and offer red or yellow flowers.
  3. Chant “Om Saravanabhava” or recite Kanda Sashti Kavasam.
  4. Offer fruit, milk or a small portion of sakkarai pongal.
  5. Complete the worship with camphor deeparadhanai.

Puja samagri: Murugan image, lamp, flowers, fruit, milk, incense, camphor and sandal paste.

Families near a Murugan temple may attend evening abhishekam or archana (அர்ச்சனை). At home, lemon rice, sundal or a simple sattvic meal may be shared after the vratam.

Sankatahara Chaturthi

Sankatahara Chaturthi (சங்கடஹர சதுர்த்தி) on 22 June is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Worship is generally performed in the evening, with moonrise considered when deciding the vratam and prayer time.

Devotees may fast during the day or eat fruit and milk until the puja is completed. Rice-based meals, onion, garlic and non-vegetarian food are usually avoided during the fasting period.

  1. Place a Ganesha image on a clean altar.
  2. Light a vilakku and offer arugampul and flowers.
  3. Chant Ganesha mantras or recite Vinayagar Agaval.
  4. Offer kozhukattai, fruit or sundal as naivedyam (நைவேத்யம்).
  5. Perform deeparadhanai and sight the Moon when appropriate.

Puja samagri: Ganesha image, arugampul, flowers, lamp, fruit, coconut, incense and kozhukattai.

Small kozhukattai is the familiar offering in many Tamil homes. Temple visitors may join the evening abhishekam and take the offered prasadam home to share with the family.
