How Tamil Families Celebrate the Festivals of May

Akshaya Tritiya

Akshaya Tritiya is observed on the third tithi of the bright fortnight. Tamil families may use the day for Vishnu or Lakshmi worship, charity, annadanam and beginning a meaningful activity.

A strict fast is not compulsory in every home. Fresh vegetarian food is preferred, while meat, alcohol and stale dishes are avoided. Buying gold is a modern custom, not a religious requirement for observing the day.

  1. Clean the prayer area and draw a small kolam.
  2. Light a vilakku before Vishnu or Mahalakshmi.
  3. Offer flowers, fruit, turmeric and kumkum.
  4. Prepare a simple payasam or sattvic naivedyam.
  5. Perform arati and give food or useful items in charity.

Puja samagri: Vishnu or Lakshmi image, lamp, flowers, turmeric, kumkum, fruit and payasam.

A small act of charity carries more meaning than pressured spending. Some homes prepare payasam and vadai, while others offer only fruit and distribute a meal to someone who needs it.

Narasimha Jayanti

Narasimha Jayanti honours Lord Narasimha, the protective form of Vishnu. Vaishnava temples may conduct special abhishekam, homam and recitation of Vishnu Sahasranamam.

Devotees may keep a fruit or milk vratam until the evening worship. Rice, wheat, pulses, onion, garlic, meat and alcohol are avoided during a strict fast.

  1. Bathe and clean the puja area.
  2. Light a lamp before Lord Narasimha or Vishnu.
  3. Offer tulasi, flowers, fruit and panakam.
  4. Recite Narasimha Kavacham or Vishnu Sahasranamam.
  5. Perform arati and distribute prasadam.

Puja samagri: Narasimha image, tulasi, flowers, lamp, fruit, panakam and sattvic naivedyam.

Panakam and neer mor suit the hot Vaikasi weather and are familiar temple offerings. Families without a Narasimha image may worship Lord Vishnu in their usual household form.

Vaikasi Visakam

Vaikasi Visakam is dedicated to Lord Murugan and is observed when Visakam Nakshatram occurs during Vaikasi. Murugan temples conduct abhishekam, archana, processions and special chanting.

Some devotees take only fruit, milk or one sattvic meal. Meat, alcohol, onion, garlic and heavy food are traditionally avoided. Kavadi or demanding vows should be undertaken only with proper preparation.

  1. Bathe early and draw a fresh kolam.
  2. Light a lamp before Lord Murugan.
  3. Offer flowers, fruit, milk, sandal paste and vibhuti.
  4. Recite Kanda Sashti Kavasam or chant “Om Saravanabhava.”
  5. Perform arati or visit a Murugan temple for archana.

Puja samagri: Murugan image, lamp, flowers, milk, fruit, sandal paste, vibhuti and naivedyam.

Paal payasam, panakam or fruit may be offered at home. In temples, the sound of “Vel Vel Muruga” and the sight of the decorated deity give Vaikasi Visakam its familiar devotional mood.

Amavasai

Amavasai is a day for ancestral remembrance and quiet prayer. Families following formal rites may perform tarpanam under a priest’s guidance or according to their established household custom.

Some devotees fast until the ancestral prayers are completed. Fresh sattvic food is preferred, while meat, alcohol, onion, garlic and stale preparations are avoided.

  1. Bathe early and clean the prayer space.
  2. Light a lamp in a quiet part of the home.
  3. Perform tarpanam only according to proper guidance.
  4. Offer water, sesame and simple food where prescribed.
  5. Give food or useful items in charity.

Puja samagri: Lamp, clean water, black sesame, darbha where customary, flowers and food for charity.

Many homes prepare a plain vegetarian meal without making the day elaborate. The focus remains on gratitude, remembrance and feeding someone according to the family’s means.

Sankatahara Chaturthi

Sankatahara Chaturthi is the monthly Vinayagar vratam. Devotees fast through the day and complete the observance after moonrise, Chandra Darshan and Vinayagar puja.

Regular grain meals are usually avoided until the vratam ends. Fruit, milk or light sattvic food may be taken when required. Check the Chennai moonrise time before beginning the evening worship.

  1. Clean the puja place and light a vilakku.
  2. Offer arugampul, flowers and fruit to Vinayagar.
  3. Prepare kozhukattai or another simple naivedyam.
  4. Recite Vinayagar Agaval or a Ganesha mantra.
  5. Observe the Moon, offer prayer and complete the fast.

Puja samagri: Vinayagar image, arugampul, flowers, lamp, coconut, fruit and kozhukattai.

Freshly steamed kozhukattai makes a homely offering. Some households prepare sundal instead, while others keep the naivedyam to coconut and banana before sharing prasadam.
